Impact India Foundation (IIF)
Impact India Foundation registered in 1983 is best known for its flagship project of the world’s first hospital train; the Lifeline Express that was launched in 1991. The train takes quality health care services free of cost to the disabled poor in rural India. The LLE has completed 125 projects til June 2011 and has reached to about 6,00,000 patients.
In 2005 Impact India Foundation (IIF) launched an ambitious project in Thane District of Maharashtra, the Community Health Initiative in eight, remote, tribal blocks covering an area of over 6000 square kilometers and a population of almost two million. The project aims at reducing the incidence of disability through prevention and curative means as well as developing appropriate systems and methodologies. The project is in line with the government’s intent to set up a sustainable, fully functional, community-owned health delivery system. After an independent Evaluation and a professionally prepared Process Document the project is planned for replication by the Government throughout India.
ToolBox worked with Impact India Foundation on the following work-streams:
- To understand the role of CHI in the community
- To provide an “unbiased” view on the strengths and weaknesses of IIF’s current approach in the implementation of the CHI project
- Develop a strategy to make this initiative sustainable as a model that could be replicated and present it to the founders of IIF
Impact of ToolBox Intervention:
- Analysis on the Sustainability of the CHI has helped to add value to the Process Document (blue print) being developed for replication of the CHI model across India
- SWOT analysis of the CHI project in Palghar block
- The recommendations have been incorporated while implementing the CHI project in the new block at Shahapur in Thane district.
