Save The Children India (STCI)

Save the children, India was founded in 1988 and works primarily with the underprivileged children belonging to the Mumbai slums. STCI offers pre-primary education (3 -5 yrs) and augments the teaching in the Municipal schools through its remedial education program. STCI currently operates 150 Balwadis and 113 study centers (either at the Municipal school premises or in slum community centers).

The rationale for setting up this program was due to

  1. Gap in the MCGM schools  specifically due to inadequate pre-primary education services catering to underprivileged children in the age groups of  3 - 5 years
  2. Children from MCGM schools ( 6 - 14 yrs) exhibit inability in reading /writing skills (language and mathematics) as per grade requirements

STCI has adopted the Multi grade multi-level pedagogy developed by the Rishi valley school (J Krishnamurthy foundation) and suited it to be applied at the Marathi medium schools where they operate. Part of the means to develop these skills in students is also through training of teachers in the use of the study kit developed by STCI. STCI has recently been approached by the Govt. of Maharashtra as training partner in 400 municipal schools for the remedial education program.

Currently ToolBox is working on the project with STCI on  towards the development of a strategic plan and financial management  templates for increased efficiency in management of financial resources, monitoring and evaluation systems for sharper impact assessment and process design for  greater operational efficiency.
