IMPACT was launched by the President of India in New Delhi on 2nd October 1983, as an International Initiative Against Avoidable Disablement, promoted by the UNDP, UNICEF and the World Health Organisation in association with the Government of India.
I. The Lifeline Express - The world’s first hospital on a train, launched in 1991, to take health services to the disabled poor in rural India. On the Lifeline Express we see 21st century medicine meeting Village India. Little wonder then that the Lifeline Express is known as “The Magic Train of India”.
I I. The Community Health Initiative (CHI) The CHI aims at 50% reduction in the future incidence of disablement and eradication of existing disabilities through preventive and curative measures. A model is being created covering 1.5 million tribal’s in rural Thane District, Maharashtra, using available delivery systems and existing infrastructure, for replication through the country. Commenced in 2005, the project is expected to be completed, with eradication of 100% existing disabilities, in 2011.
